The Best Moments from the Brawl Stars Dev Team Reddit Q&A

The development team for Brawl Stars did a Q&A with the Brawl Stars community in the Brawl Stars subreddit a couple of days ago. We’ve compiled the best questions and answers from the Q&A session. The original Q&A can be found here on Reddit.

There were a lot of questions about whether or not Supercell will balance Brawlers based on the game mode. Supercell clarified that one of the key features of the game is to be able to use different types of Brawlers for each game modes. There are no plans to buff/nerf Brawlers based on game mode as of right now.

Another question that popped up a lot was if the Brawl Stars dev team took into account of the community’s ideas. The dev team stated that they do take into account our ideas when implementing features, buffs and nerfs into the game. What does that mean for us as a community? That means we need to share our ideas if we want things changed in Brawl Stars.

The following questions and answers are the most informative posts we found in the Reddit Q&A:

Question:

  • Do you guys ever plan on fixing the duplicate problem in solo queueing?

Brawl Stars Dev Team: We do have plans on improving this! Our first priority was fast and efficient matchmaking. Currently the matchmaking pool is smaller since we’re in “Canada only”. With a larger pool, we can make adjustments to create ‘better’ matches.

Question:

  • How do you decide whether a game is worth releasing globally or not?
  • There have been many interesting character suggestions in the sub, would you ever consider adding some of them, or at least using them as a basis for new brawlers?
  • Will there ever be a way to get gems for F2P players? I’d love to buy skins for my favorite brawlers, but currently there’s no way to get gems besides buying them.

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

How do you decide whether a game is worth releasing globally or not?

I don’t think we could say it better than the team lead from Clash Royale. Check out his GDC talk Quality is worth Killing for. Supercell is a serial killer, and Jonathan does a fantastic job of explaining our culture, and how we decide whether or not to kill a game. We’re a small company, so the most crucial resource for us is people. We have to be sure that if a live game is taking 1/5 of our people, that it’s giving 1/5 of our success.

There have been many interesting character suggestions in the sub, would you ever consider adding some of them, or at least using them as a basis for new brawlers?

Definitely! Most of us read the subreddit with great interest. The game has been in development for over 1.5 years, and sometimes it’s eerie how close you guys are to real things that we’ve prototyped or tested. Keep the ideas coming!

Will there ever be a way to get gems for F2P players? I’d love to buy skins for my favorite brawlers, but currently there’s no way to get gems besides buying them.

We’ve been chatting about free skins, or perhaps skins earned by trophy-level. There’s currently no plan to give out free gems, but it’s not a final decision. It’s something we’re reevaluating and discussing all the time as a team.

Question:

  • Are there going to be any meaningful changes to the chip/monetization system?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

Absolutely. We actually had a long meeting yesterday about the Chip/Elixir/Brawl Box. The guiding focus in creating the system was to release Brawlers at a rate that wasn’t too fast. Otherwise new players might get overwhelmed very quickly.

In the midgame we still want the Brawl Boxes to feel great. We think it will improve naturally as more Brawlers are released, but there’s more we can do to improve this as well.

Overall, we’re aware that it needs improving and there will definitely be some tweaks coming!

Question:

  • How did you come up for the idea of Brawl Stars?
  • How long have you been working on it?
  • Do you think you will keep adding brawlers or do you think at a certain point the game will become too crowded/ too hard to balance?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

How did you come up for the idea of Brawl Stars?

We felt really passionate about making a real time PvP game for mobile. We started brainstorming a bunch of different ways to make this happen. In fact Brawl Stars was originally space themed! Eventually, after lots of experimentation, Brawl Stars was born.

How long have you been working on it?

We’ve been working on Brawl Stars for about 1.5 years

Do you think you will keep adding brawlers or do you think at a certain point the game will become too crowded/ too hard to balance?

We will definitely keep adding Brawlers! This is a tough question that we’ve been discussing as a team. At some point in the future it may become a challenge, but we’re confident that we can solve it!

Question:

What are the Brawl Stars team’s favourite Brawlers? (To play)

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

  • Chris – “Piper and Jessie”
  • Janne – “Bull and Nita! (Crow, if I had him)”
  • Dogemusha – “Dynamike main! But most cups with Bull currently”
  • Wyatt – “Barley all the way!”
  • Matti – “Shelly for sure”
  • Ryan/Rlight – “Piper! But I typically rotate every single character (except Poco. I’m terrible with Poco)”
  • Pawchaw/Paul – “Spike! (but I haven’t unlocked him yet)” <– He’s salty

Question:

  • Are there any plans to do something about people who go AFK the entire match?
  • Also, is a Bounty rework in the sights? It feels unfair to have the lead the entire match but lose because you died at the last second.

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

Preventing AFK players is something we want to improve on!

For Bounty – Our current thinking is to raise the starting Bounty to 2 stars. This would always lead to a positive trade when defeating someone. Additionally, we plan to alter the middle star so that it doesn’t raise the Bounty of the person who picked it up.

Question:

  • How does matchmaking work?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

Great question! There’s a bit of confusion here so we’re happy to clarify.

Matchmaking is based on the Trophies of the Brawler you’re currently playing.

This is in all cases except for players with less than 100 total trophies. In these cases there’s a bit of extra math which prevents high-level players from matching with brand new players.

Question:

  • Are there any new game modes that you guys are working on? If so, can you give us a brief description of them?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

We have a prototype mode that works a bit like a soccer match! Not sure if it will ever reach the live game though.

Question:

  • Is there any plans for possibly nerfing or buffing characters per specific game types?
  • Will there be more options to earn coins?
  • Is there going to be a much slower way to earn coins besides EXP?
  • Is there going to be a Rank mode?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

Is there any plans for possibly nerfing or buffing characters per specific game types?

We believe that part of the spice of Brawl Stars is that certain characters have their strengths in certain game modes.

Question 2 is – Will there be more options to earn coins?

We don’t want Brawl Stars to feel like a grind. You can always keep pushing for Trophies!

Is there going to be a Rank mode?

This is a really cool idea. We’re already starting to think about how to make competitive play fun and exciting. We don’t have a clear path yet, but the brainstorming has begun!

Question:

Thank you so much for doing this, and for a brilliant game.

  1. As the leader of Denmarks best clan, I was wondering if you’ll add clan vs. clan battles in the future?
  2. How do you foresee the future of competitive Brawl Stars?

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

As the leader of Denmarks best clan, I was wondering if you’ll add clan vs. clan battles in the future?

This sounds really cool!

How do you foresee the future of competitive Brawl Stars?

We’re super excited for a competitive/Esports Brawl Stars. We’ll try our best to help encourage competitive play. Currently most of our balancing is based on higher-trophy games, and we’ll keep looking at improvements and ideas to make competitive play a reality.

Question:

  • Are you happy with the game as of right now?
  • How do you determine whether a new brawler is worth adding to the game or not?
  • Do you plan on adding any suggestions from the subreddit?

Thank you for taking your time to answer our questions! We all really appreciate it!

Brawl Stars Dev Team:

Are you happy with the game as of right now?

We are! The core gameplay feels great, and the response from all of you has been amazing. That being said, we have a constant drive to improve. Nothing is perfect, nothing is finished, and we have so much more to do. This is just the beginning.

How do you determine whether a new brawler is worth adding to the game or not?

First, we brainstorm. A new Brawler needs to add something new to the gameplay. We want a fairly small cast of unique characters. Brainstorming happens every day. Somebody will turn their chair around and say “Hey, what about xyz!” Once we’ve got a good idea, we make a prototype and test it out. From there, we balance and decide whether it should go live.

Do you plan on adding any suggestions from the subreddit?

We look at the suggestions on the subreddit all the time! Even though an idea may not make it into the game, you guys inspire our creativity and constantly drive us to do better. We’re a small team, so we have to prioritize what we’re working on. Your suggestions might come into the game in six days, or six months. You never know!
